The idea of this book first came to me when we decided to mount a new exhibit at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo in 2002 to
celebrate its centennial.
The original idea was proposed by Dr. Mahmoud Mabrouk, a sculptor and a member of the committee. He argued that this would be the first time a major exhibit would be shown in the basement of a museum, and would have the appeal of novelty.
He also observed that this part of the Egyptian Museum was a place of mystery to many people, about which stories and rumors- that it was piled floor to ceiling with dusty antiquities, and that no one knew what or where anything wascirculated
constantly. I agreed with him, and we decided to call the new exhibit “Hidden Treasures of the Cairo Museum.”
