توصيف الموقع :

In 1962, Kamel Abu Elsa'dat, in association with the Egyptian Marin Forces, extracted some archaeological objects from the Citadel of Qaitbay site which is located in the eastern border of Pharos Island in front of Qaitbay Citadel from the eastern side. Starting from 1994, the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med) worked on this site and found the monuments surrounding the Pompey's Pillar which were thrown into the harbor in 1176 during the reign of Saladin al Ayyubi to hinder the Crusader invasion coming from Cyprus . The site also has the remains of the lighthouse and its island fallen due an earthquake. The remains weighing more than 20 tons were lined up into one row heading to the north. More than 3000 archaeological objects of pink and grey granite, white, black with white veins marble, basalt and quartzite were uncovered. Among the huge objects found at the site as well, are seven Sphynx statues and the wrecks of three ships dating to the period from the 3rd C. BC to the 7th C. AD.
