The cemetery of the mountain of the dead is the second most important monument that was found in Matrouh Governorate following the temple of the Oracle (Amun). The cone shaped mountain which is located 2 km away from Siwa Oasis contains thousands of rock cut tombs. The mountain was the main cemetery in Siwa Oasis during theancient times.
Depending on the inscriptions and the archaeological finds, the cemetery could be dated to the date of its oldest tomb which means the 26th Dynasty. The cemetery was used until the Late Roman Age (Byzantine).
The mountain of the dead depicted its importance from the colored tombs it contains, the four most important of them are; Pa-Thoth (Niperpathot), Si- Amun, the Crocodile and Mesu-Isis which is considered the most beautiful tomb in the western desert in general, as it contains complete scenes illustrating the ancient Egyptian belief in resurrection and immortality. What really distinguishes this Ptolemaic tomb is the mixing between the features of Grecian and Egyptian arts, which is clear in the illustrated scenes on the walls of the tomb.
