This Cemetery is distinguished by its location overlooking the sea; it is one of the oldestHellenistic cemeteries and dates back to the late Fourth Century BC. The Cemetery remained in use until the late Second Century BC. until it was swallowed by the urban crawling of Alexandria city at that time. That is why it is considered a pure Greek cemetery that has never been used during the Roman Period.
The tomb belonged to a rich Grecian family then was transformed into a public cemetery by the passing of time. The tomb consists of twofloors; the upper floor is above the ground and takes the shape of the Grecian houses, the lower floor is under the ground, it consists of some openings cut into the rock.
A large number of potteries used in preserving the ashes of the dead were found at Shatby, burning the dead bodies and keeping the ashes is an old Grecian habit. In addition to this, a huge number of funerary plates (gravestones) which weredecorated by various religious scenes and were used to close the openings after putting the ashesjars inside were also found
